Gabriela Sherrod is a rising junior majoring in psychology at APP Cornerstone Member Birmingham-Southern College. Gabriela, an Atlanta native, is a member of BSC’s Hess Fellows program, which places students for eight weeks during the summer to work as full-time staff members at leading advocacy organizations.
We sat down with Gabriela last week for an introductory conversation. Here’s what she had to say:
What made you decide to major in psychology?
I think people are fascinating! I’m always seeking to understand others. Humans are so complex, which makes psychology so interesting.
What brought you to Alabama Poverty Project?
When I looked over APP’s website, the issues hit really close to home. Georgia has many of the same problems relating to college access and food security as Alabama.
What do you think is the most pressing issue relating to college access today?
The difference in educational quality between public and private schools. Private schools often have better resources and better college access than do public schools. Low-income children often do not have access to private schools due to the financial burden or other issues. This puts them at a disadvantage solely because of their financial situation.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

What is your favorite animal?
A dog and a giraffe.

The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo.
What do you hope to get out of your experience as a Hess Fellow at APP?
I just want to learn all that I can about poverty in Alabama!
